Northern Ireland, Evangelicalism, and Christian Nationalism - Interview with Jamie Bambrick

Why have so many evangelicals been "red-pilled" over the last decade? What lies behind the failure of evangelical church engagement with culture? What is it about Northern Irish culture that helped it resist many secular liberal advances far longer than the rest of Britain? How might politically active evangelicals learn from the example of the often demonised Presbyterian pastor and Prime Minister, Ian Paisley? And why are modern evangelicals still perpetually anxious about Christian Nationalism?

In this special episode, Aaron talks to evangelical pastor and noteworthy cultural commentary YouTuber, Jamie Bambrick to discuss these important themes and more in another illuminating conversation.

Restore Britain and the Future of Christian Politics

The launch of Restore Britain catalysed a wave of patriotic fervour across the nation. For many, this felt different to the launch of other political movements in recent decades. Why are people joining Restore who never previously cared about politics and what does this suggest about the true depth of what has gone wrong in Britain and the yearning for a deeper solution? Aaron and Nathan reflect on such questions and consider what kind of approach Christians ought to take towards the British political scene today, including how to overcome the strange modern evangelical anxiety about being "too political".

Why did European Christendom collapse? What went wrong with the west? Where and when did it start going wrong? How you answer these questions will determine what you are willing to do about it. For many, the answer is Christian Nationalism. But how will this look in Britain compared with the US based on the cultural history and temperaments of these familial nations? In this comeback episode, Aaron and Nathan discuss several threads towards a Christian response to cultural decline, challenging the Church to raise up the kind of men needed to defend their spiritual and cultural heritage and advance Christ's kingdom in our time.

Interview with Bishop Ceirion Dewar: "Far Right" Bishops, Political Churches, and Christian Nationalism

Why are people now talking about Christian Nationalism in Britain? Why are the mainstream media and secular societies suddenly coming out in force to discredit it? And why do so many established church leaders agree more with the secularists than the Christians? How did the Church become so politically impotent to speak into nationalistic concerns? What does it mean to be a nation and to seek to preserve one's cultural heritage? Why have Christians been so unwilling to stand up for inconvenient truths in these areas?

In this special episode Aaron speaks with Bishop Cei Dewar, who caused something of a storm when he spoke boldly at the Tommy Robinson rally after the 2024 Paris Olympics, in an impromptu speech which subsequently went viral. He has since spoken at various related events including the apparently controversial "Unite the Kingdom" rally. Who is he? What are his main influences? How did he learn to preach like that? Why is such preaching so different to other bishops? And was it fair of Sky News to call him "the Far Right bishop"?

Abortion, Feminism, and Evangelical Cowardice: Interview with Dave Brennan

While many evangelical churches call themselves "conservative", the reality on the ground is often very different, especially when it comes to challenging front-line issues which might offend the closet feminists in their midst.

This is one reason why evangelical churches and leaders struggle to talk about obvious Biblical moral issues like abortion at just the time they should. In this episode, Aaron interviews Dave Brennan, who heads up Brephos, seeking to help conservative evangelical churches in Britain embrace an unashamedly pro-life emphasis.

How did evangelical churches get to this point where they needed reminding about an issue that is seemingly so obvious? What other Biblical and historical examples of challenging social issues can be drawn upon to help pastors think through the problem? What is the long-term cost of ignoring a more robust evangelical witness on social issues? What kind of reformation does the Church require in order to wake up and speak up?

Why Are Evangelical Churches So Cowardly?: Discussion with Pastor Ebow Essel

What's gone wrong with modern evangelical churches? Why are they so feminised? Why do the men no longer know how to act like men? Why are "Bible-believing" churches often so reticent to apply Bible passages that challenge the way they do (or don't do) things? If evangelical churches are "Gospel people," why have they often been so quick to capitulate to social or state pressure to stop meeting and evangelising?

In this episode, Aaron is interviewed by Pastor Ebow Essel, a former military man, to talk about how this social "conditioning" of the Church leads it to ignore the commands of its commanding officer in the midst of the battle. Over the last 50 years in particular, it's obvious that the desire to engage the culture for Christ has led many Christians to simply capitulate to secular norms in everyday life.

In light of these many compromises, what will it take for the Church to wake up to the demands of the Word of God in our time, and regain its courage, faith, and obedience in light of the advance of the kingdom in our nations?

Interview with Terry Virgo - Apostles, Prophets, Reformers, and Pioneers

What does it really mean to be a reformer in the Church? Many evangelicals laud the legacy of the Protestant reformation whilst holding very tightly to particular traditions and practices within their churches which can, over time, drift further and further away from Biblical norms. Those who seek to recover them usually end up causing trouble, one way or another.

In this special episode of That Good Fight, Aaron interviews Terry Virgo, one of the most important leaders in the Church in Britain within the last 50 years, having founded the Reformed charismatic movement, Newfrontiers, which has since grown to several thousand congregations in many nations across the world. Virgo recounts some of his story, including his time sitting at the feet of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who gave him vital advice in the midst of the conflicts he was being confronted with by other church leaders at the time.

Aaron and Terry discuss what lessons can be learnt when "pioneering" beyond the existing ecclesial establishment, what often goes wrong with the modern "charismatic" movement, particularly in relation to worshp, and what it means to take a more thoroughgoing Biblical approach to the role of the Spirit in both challenging and encouraging His people when most needed.

For more of Terry Virgo's content:
https://www.terryvirgo.org/

For more of Aaron Edwards' content:
https://thatgoodfight.substack.com/

They also discuss the significance of households in the mission of the Church and the transformation of society in light of his book, The Household and the War for the Cosmos, the importance of money for Christians, the significance of Tolkien and the Inklings for our times, as well as his more recent reflections on A.I. and its potentially "Sauronic" effects on human civilization.

What happened to the England we once knew and loved? How did it come about that the raising of the flag of the Cross of St. George is now seen as "controversial" in England? Why do so few Christians care about their people, place, and culture anymore? Why are Roger Scruton's reflections on "the forbidding of England" so poignant and timely despite being written a quarter of a century ago? How can Christian men step up to help make this green and pleasant land Christian again?

Interview with Bob of Speaker's Corner - Why Britain Needs Muscular Christianity

What will it take to truly reach Britain for Christ? In this special episode, Aaron sat down with Bob of Speaker's Corner to talk about the need for the Church to wake up to the front line issues all around them, challenging the soft effeminacy of the Church, and recovering the need for a more outward and front-footed "muscular" Christianity, as we've seen in varioius ages of the Church.

Such an approach requires the kind of faith that is willing to take more risks in bold proclamation of that faith before our enemies, as well as a unity among Christians. But it also requires boldness in recognising that political strategy should be an important aspect of the Church's mission too - this is something too few modern Christians have been accustomed to thinking about, let alone doing anything about it.

The recent parliamentary votes on abortion up to birth and assisted suicide suggest a deep erosion of British morality and identity. How could such bills represent the moral compass of a nation with historic Christian foundations? Aaron and Nathan wonder aloud how bad would things have to get before our present democratic constitutional monarchy could be called into question? What is the cost of the loss of true nobility in the nation over the last century? And why has the Church been so impotent? What might it take to speak truth to the patriots of Britain and other nations who are starting to feel the loss of Christendom?

One of the problems in recent evangelical institutions has been following the trends of secular culture. This can happen overtly, as with the effects of BLM and Covid in 2020. But it can also happen with the remnants of liberal thinking even among otherwise conservative leaders. In recent times, the term "Woke Right" has been used even by Christians as a stick to beat the new social "deplorables" who take a more rightward approach to the mission of reaching western culture today. What does it mean to apply the Gospel not only to individuals but also to nations? What is the inheritance of Christian civilization in this nation? What are we losing when we neglect it? What will it take to reclaim it? Aaron and Nathan discuss what's at stake and what it will mean to reach British patriots with the Gospel today.

Farewell Tom: Men Online, Men at Home, Men at Church

Over the last half-decade, many Christian men have become more frustrated with the compromises in their churches, the inadequate theology they’ve inherited, and the general decay of their society. As such, many have taken the “red pill” to disbelieve much of what they’ve been told was true, opening the window to previously “forbidden” convictions in numerous fields.

What are the dangers with this high-speed radicalisation of opinions? How should Christians think about online “anons”? Are they wasting their time or are they fighting the good fight and protecting their family? For what reasons should a man lead his family out of (or into) a particular church? Are there ways that churches can counteract a father’s role in leading his family? How can men live lives of conviction which lead to long-lasting fruit in their churches and families?

In this special episode of That Good Fight, Aaron speaks with Tom Chaldecott for his final ever episode before he moves away. They talk a bit about Tom’s own journey, why he’s leaving the podcast, and whether or not he may now be “redpilling” on redpilling!

They discuss Joel’s church journey from Vineyard to Acts 29 to his current church, the compromises he observed within mainstream evangelicalism, his shift towards cessationism and patriarchy, and the various controversies in which he has been involved more recently, including various reactions to his views on Judaism, Islam, and the older generations who have gone before him, and what keeps him rooted amidst the storms.
Why Are British Evangelicals So Anti-Right Wing?

The automatic socio-political posture of British evangelicals within the last several decades has been to drift further and further Left. There is often very little awareness that their political assumptions are out of sync with many Christians before their time. The default position of many leaders is often to reject any views, practices, or people who have been deemed “too Right Wing”, even discouraging other Christians from trying to reach them.

Why is the Church often far more fearful of the Far Right than the Far Left? Are their concerns about the dangers of the new Right valid? As western culture potentially moves further Right in coming years, what role might Christians play in shaping the new cultural landscape?

What kind of leadership changes cultures for good? President Trump's first week in office included all sorts of executive orders which go against the grain of the cultural tide of previous decades. To many observers, much of this seems like the kind of common sense decision-making we've not seen in some time. Yet for others (including many Christians on our side of the pond) such actions only further fuel the fires of malice against the likes of Trump. Why is this?

Is the modern Christian aversion to strong, masculine leadership a good thing or does it show the way we've been unduly influenced by the principles and stories of the secular, liberal, feminist paradigm over decades? What is the root of the loss of honour and risk in modern leadership? How might the recent "vibe shift" towards conservative principles in the US affect the culture (and the Church) here in the UK?

Why is Christmas still the high point of the secular calendar year? Why does it remain so embedded within the cultural imagination? Perhaps because Christmas is the clearest public manifestation of "Christendom" that there ever was.

What is at stake when the Christianity of Christmas is gradually minimised? Is it something worth fighting for? With secularism and Islam encroaching in the West today, seemingly innocuous Christmas traditions may matter more than ever. The Church of England often squanders its unique opportunity to uphold this Christendom heritage in/around Christmas. What can good Christian gentlemen do to take back "Xmas" for Christ and proclaim his lordship in and through it?

Join Aaron, Nathan, and Tom for a special festive episode of That Good Fight, where we talk about everything from carols, lights, sermons, Saracens' heads, Dickens, Scrooge, Kierkegaard, Prince Albert, Luther, Handel, all the way to Nathan's curious model Christmas village.
Handel’s Messiah and the Reformation of Music

One of the paradoxes of evangelical history is the tension between cultural excellence and religious piety. We have often been suspicious of aesthetic excellence, opting instead for simplicity and heart-level devotional experience. Why does Scripture instruct us to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs? Does God care about how melodic the music is, or are such concerns an inevitable heart distraction from true worship?

In this episode, Aaron sits down with special guest, Chris Horn, a trained chorister, to discuss music, worship, and the timeless brilliance of Handel’s Messiah, composed at the same time as the Great Awakening. What did John Wesley & co make of it? Are the concerns of evangelical heart religion divorced from a piece of music as complex as Handel’s?

How can evangelical churches begin to take musical aesthetics seriously again without succumbing to the aesthetic idolatry often found in the secularised choral tradition? How might musical excellence help the Church shape culture again?

Is this because they fear association with social deplorables? How should Christians reach men on the right today? What are the dangers?

What are the consequences of shutting out the young men of the Right, and what is at stake if we do?

In this follow-up episode to their previous discussion, Aaron, Nathan, and Tom talk through the implications of the socio-political Right in the UK, the postwar consensus, the ongoing shadow of fascism in western culture, and the ongoing feuds these issues are causing within the new Reformed Right, encompassed by the recent “Antioch Declaration”.

Donald Trump winning the American presidential election for a second time appears to be yet another pivotal moment in western civilisation today. How should Christians interpret it?

How have evangelicals changed their views of Trump over the last decade, and why are British people often so repulsed by him? What do the reactions to Trump tell us about the extent to which people are fed up of Leftist elitism within the culture?

If one of the keys to Trump’s success was reaching disenfranchised men, what might it look like for the Church to do this? Why have evangelical churches been so reticent to build bridges with men on the Right? What challenges await those who dare to try?

How does the way our churches run their meetings disciple us over time? Are there some styles or forms of a worship service which produce certain effects over time? Why, for example, is choral evensong so beautiful and yet (in the UK at least) often populated by so few faith-filled people, and led by so many faithless people? Is band-led singing a "better" form than high Church liturgy? What do you lose (or gain?) when you don't allow for congregational spontaneity within church services? And how do the answers to these questions affect what it means to be Christendomian and/or reformational today?

Why Multiculturalism is a Very Bad Idea

In this episode we talk about the impact of multiculturalism on British (and western) culture; the rise of globalism; The Strange Death of Europe, and the mission of the Church.

Too few Christians today are aware of the societal disruption caused when the liberal ideology of multiculturalism is imposed on a culture with the assumption that contradictory worldviews can harmonise (whilst eroding the dominant culture) without significant unrest. Instead, Christians often assume that multiculturalism is not a secular idea but a fruit of the Gospel bringing different people together.

Is thinking about such wider civilizational issues a distraction from the Church's mission? Are Christians allowed to challenge multiculturalism and immigration, or are they too worried about being called "Far-Right" by the political elites for doing so?

What if multiculturalism leads (as many predict) to Islam becoming the dominant culture and religion in places like Britain? Is it possible for Christians to love their neighbour and not care about the disintegration of western culture?

Join Aaron, Tom, and Nathan as they discuss all this and more!

Western masculinity is in crisis, and the modern Church is part of the problem. Rather than proclaiming ‘muscular Christianity’ the Church has often effeminised men and joined the feminist chorus lambasting manly virtues as “toxic masculinity”.

Why has the Church been so reluctant to call men to “act like men” (1Cor. 16:13)? How do we respond both to the effeminate Christianity which over-emphasises gentle meekness and the non-Christian ‘manosphere’ reactions which glorify strength instead of gentleness?

Why is the stereotypical ‘English gentleman’ a target of attack today? Does he have Christian roots? If so, what are they, and how might they be recovered as a model of godly masculinity today? Join Aaron and Nathan as they share their thoughts on everything from James Bond to Pinocchio to Boniface to Anthony Esolen to Downton Abbey to The Ultimate Warrior! Enjoy…

How should Christians think about their nation? Is patriotism inevitably idolatrous? Whilst modern Christians have many reasons for being cautious of nationalistic fervour, few are aware of the reverse problem. Many westerners today are taught to be embarrassed by their national heritage and culture, leading to significant cultural decay. This affects not only national cultures but also local family and folk cultures, which risk becoming evermore obsolete as the West becomes more uniformly globalised.

Does God not care about any of this? Has he called His people to care about such issues or to ignore them? Does national identity play any role in a Christian's mission to advance the kingdom of God in and to the nations of this world? Join Nathan and Aaron as they talk about this vital topic for our times.

In this special episode of That Good Fight we talk about Aaron's recent employment tribunal with the evangelical Bible college that infamously fired him for a tweet challenging the increasing acceptance of homosexuality in the Church. Aaron recounts his story and elaborates on some of the details he was previously unable to disclose about the case. Alongside Nathan and Tom, he discusses the lessons that might be learned from the experience of being an evangelical in a courtroom seeking truth and justice. They also talk about why more Christians ought to think about the significance of the legal system, and the role it will play in the rebuilding of Christendom in these lands and beyond.

What Does It Mean To Be Christendomian?

Many evangelicals have been taught that to care too much about wider issues of culture, politics, and society, would be a distraction from the Gospel. But even if forms of "social action" have often been a worldly preoccupation for liberals, evangelicals dismiss the call for societal transformation at their peril. Refusing to be salt and light in the world will eventually come back to haunt the Church in the end. While there are certainly some negative byproducts of historic Christendom, including worldly corruption and nominal faith, what if those evangelicals most keen to embrace a "post-Christendom" attitude invite other forms of worldliness and unfaithfulness into their thinking and (in)action? Does a robust approach to socio-political influence inevitably lead to compromise? Or are there ways of combining a truly pious faith of the heart with the outward influence akin to the kingdom of God for which we're called to pray "on earth as it is in heaven"? Aaron and Nathan discuss all this and more, including the surprising significance of a certain Kevin Costner film.

In this episode, Nathan and Aaron discuss when church authorities can and should be challenged in light of the authority of Scripture. Whilst some see the Reformation as sacred and the Reformers almost like venerated saints, others see it as a heresy that undermined the Church and introduced liberalism.
What Does It Mean to Be "Evangelical"?

What is an "evangelical" and why should we care?

Here's some of what we got into:

Emerging Church apostates

Exvangelical deconstruction

TGC-centredness

Compromise & cowardice

Defence, offence, proclamation

Given the increasingly broad amount of people who now use that term, should we ditch it altogether? Aaron and Nathan talk through some of their own story as evangelicals over the last two decades, including the influence of various movements that have arisen within evangelicalism in the time they've known one another, such as the Emerging Church, the New Calvinism, The Gospel Coalition, and now, "Exvangelicalsm". They talk through and what we need for a more robustly evangelical approach in the years ahead, concerned not merely with "guarding" the truth, but going on the offensive in "proclaiming" the truth when and how it needs to be proclaimed.

Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might

Defy the devil and act like men

Love the brotherhood

Fear God Christ is Lord

God save the king...

A new podcast from 'That Good Fight' - a Reformation for Gentlemen. Featuring Aaron Edwards (@aaron_p_edwards), Tom Chaldecott (@TomChaldecott), and Nathan Paylor (@nathanpaylor).

This first episode is a “teaser” introducing the key themes around which we’ll be circling, focussed on what it means to being evangelical, reformational, Christendomian, patriotic, and gentlemanly. At a time in which the evangelical establishment is compromised, Christendom’s legacy is reviled, patriotism is despised, and Biblical masculinity is mocked and undermined, we seek to encourage a more hopeful, evangelical vision for Christendom which galvanises the right kind of gentlemen for the right kind of fight.
